Afro-House is one of the fastest-growing sounds in clubs and at festivals across Europe. But what exactly is it, and how is it different from Afrobeats or Amapiano? Here is a simple guide — and a look at how Afro-House artist NazB brings the sound to life in Zürich and beyond.
What is Afro-House?
Afro-House is house music built on African rhythms. It keeps the steady four-on-the-floor beat of house, usually around 118 to 124 BPM, and adds layered African percussion, deep basslines and vocals that often carry African languages and melodies. The roots go back to South Africa, where producers mixed house music with local sounds, and from there it spread to clubs around the world.
Afro-House vs Afrobeats vs Amapiano
- Afrobeats is West African pop music from Nigeria and Ghana — melodic, song-based and usually a bit slower.
- Afro-House is club music — long, hypnotic tracks made to keep a dance floor moving.
- Amapiano is a South African style with slow, rolling grooves and the famous log-drum bass.
The three blend easily, and many of today’s best sets move between all of them in one night.
NazB: an Afrobeats and Afro-House artist from Zürich
NazB is a Nigerian-born artist based in Zürich, Switzerland. He started from Afrobeats but has made Afro-House a core part of his sound, mixing Afrobeats melodies and vocals with Afro-House basslines and Amapiano grooves. That mix makes his music work both as songs you sing along to and as club records DJs can play all night.
